David Morritt's Journey: A Story of Vision and Dedication

The history of Morritt’s Resort is not just a timeline of construction; it’s an exhilarating saga of one man’s unwavering vision, driven by a passion to share a piece of paradise. David Morritt’s dedication transformed a quiet corner of the Caribbean into a thriving hub, forever changing the face of Grand Cayman’s East End.

The Serendipitous Start: Founding Morritt's Resort

The Morritt story begins with a serendipitous detour. In 1988, having established a successful property development lineage in London, David Morritt was looking for a new horizon. A trip to Grand Cayman led him away from the bustling Seven Mile Beach to a secluded spot on the island’s eastern end. There, he discovered the Tortuga Club, a charming but modest property. It was a classic “love at first sight” moment. David didn’t just see an existing resort; he saw a blank canvas for a dream.

The serene, untouched shores of East End, Grand Cayman. Vision & Dedication: David took a colossal leap of faith, purchasing the property to transform it into his ultimate vision: a “home away from home” where families could create lifelong memories. This commitment marked him as a pioneer, venturing into an area long overlooked by major developers. His tenacity anchored economic development in the East End, providing countless livelihoods and making the resort a cherished part of the local community.

The Great Expansion: From Tortuga to Grand and The Londoner

The vision couldn’t be contained. Over the years, Morritt’s experienced continuous, dynamic expansion, growing from the original Tortuga Club to the majestic Morritt’s Grand Resort. Each new phase was an injection of luxury and enthusiasm into the timeshare experience.

A notable milestone was the opening of The Londoner section. Oceanfront on the Morritt’s Resort property, East End.

Amenities & Vision: Inspired by his hometown’s hosting of the 2012 Olympics, David poured his heart into creating units of finest quality. The Londoner delivered an elevated experience with two- and three-bedroom luxury suites, boasting extra-large private balconies, spectacular ocean views, granite countertops, and a “Caribbean Chic” décor. This project showcased his consummate perfectionism, proving that his resort could offer a world-class, state-of-the-art vacation in the tranquil setting of East End.

The Transatlantic Leap: The Birth of Château Morritt

David’s boundless energy and entrepreneurial spirit soon looked beyond the Caribbean. His adventure in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, was a striking parallel to his start in Cayman. A simple walk led him to a small bed and breakfast by the peaceful Lake Moore. He was instantly captivated by the view, saying: “Just like in the East End, I had a vision…the lake, the beach, the trees were beautiful.”

Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. Dedication & Benefit: Even as the world grappled with uncertainty (building began during a global pandemic), David embodied his mantra: “I build when no one else does.” This unshakeable resolve led to the creation of Château Morritt, a hotel-condo mountain retreat. The benefit was ingenious: establishing a valuable North American synergy that would introduce a new market to the Morritt’s brand while offering existing members a spectacular mountain alternative to their tropical haven.

The 30th Anniversary Promise: The Final Dream

In 2019, Morritt’s Tortuga Club celebrated its 30th Anniversary, not with a backward glance, but with a bold declaration of the future. David announced plans for a momentous $30 million main building with at least 40 new units.

Vision & Enthusiasm: This project was the culmination of an original, deferred dream the centerpiece David had always wanted to build but had set aside decades ago due to limited financing. Now, he was ready to finally realize it, promising to deliver a structure that would rival the height and luxury of the 10-story hotels on Seven Mile Beach. He spoke with heartfelt enthusiasm: “After 30 years, I’m still keeping my promise,” a commitment to not just his resort, but to the entire Cayman tourism sector, aiming to welcome 30,000 families per year. It was a pledge of fierce dedication, assuring everyone: “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”

National Recognition: The Crowning Achievement

The story of dedication was formally recognized in the highest manner. Achievement: David Morritt was celebrated as a National Hero in the Cayman Islands at the 2025 National Heroes Day Awards.

In a moment of supreme professional triumph, David’s thoughts were of his team. He humbly dedicated the prestigious award to his incredible staff, acknowledging that their loyalty and hard work over 36 years were the true driving force behind his success and the longevity of his vision. This act reinforced the central, human theme of Morritt’s story: a foundation built on family, team spirit, and community.
